This autumn, two engaging lectures were delivered as part of the Gender and Human Rights Lecture Series hosted jointly by the Centre for Law, Religion and Society (CLRS) and the Irish Centre for Human Rights (ICHR). Both sessions offered timely insights into questions of equality, institutional practice, and lived experience, with strong links to themes explored within the BILQIS project.

Intersectionality and Institutional Barriers in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Đermana Kurić, Research Associate on the BILQIS project, opened the series with a lecture examining the case of Emela Mujanović and the intersections of gender, religion, and institutional power in the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Drawing on an intersectional framework, she traced how overlapping systems of exclusion shaped the trajectory and consequences of the case, highlighting both the personal and structural impact of unequal treatment.

From Survivor-Centred to Survivor-Led Approaches in GBV Accountability
The second lecture featured Róisín Gallagher, Coordinator of the Irish Consortium on Gender-Based Violence (ICGBV). Her talk explored the evolution of GBV accountability models, charting the shift from survivor-centred to survivor-led approaches. Drawing on recent ICGBV research, as well as international engagements at the UN and sector events, she unpacked the conditions that enable survivors’ leadership and the transformative outcomes that follow when their expertise directs responses to violence.

Together, these events offered rich reflections on gendered inequality, institutional responsibility, and the ongoing work of creating just, responsive environments for women in diverse contexts.
