BILQIS researchers took part in Jadal 2026: Muslim Women Navigating Theology, Ethics, and Society, held in Doha from 31 January to 2 February 2026.

The BILQIS panel, “Negotiating Spaces of Authority: Muslim Women, Power, and Ethical Agency Across Europe,” brought together research from Sweden, Greece, Ireland, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The session explored how Muslim women navigate religious authority, family law, institutional gaps, and ethical decision-making across different European contexts.

The panel was moderated by Professor Roja Fazaeli, Principal Investigator of the BILQIS project.

Presentations included:

  • Dr Tiba Bonyad, Transnational (Non)Authority, Mahr, and the Marginalization of Muslim Women in Sweden
  • Dr Maria Kokkinou, Living Between Laws: An Ethnographic Inquiry into Muslim Women’s Divorce Cases in Greece
  • Dr Sanja Bilić, Pluralism Without Institutions: Muslim Women, Authority, and Ethical Agency in Ireland
  • Đermana Kurić, Muslim Women as Religious Actors in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The panel was delivered in a hybrid format and contributed to wider discussions at Jadal 2026 on Muslim women’s theological, ethical, and social agency.

Jadal brought together a diverse international group of scholars, practitioners, and community-based thinkers, creating space for exchange across disciplines, regions, and intellectual traditions. The generous hospitality of the hosts and informal conversations alongside the formal programme also opened valuable opportunities for new connections and future collaboration.
